Report on Jazz4Jed - Wonderbrass Jazz Workshop in Torfaen 6-7th March 2015.

The workshop was held at Panteg House Social Club on the above dates, running from 10-4 on the Saturday and 10-5 with a performance that included the participants on the Sunday evening 6-8. As planned, Wonderbrass' Section Leaders were able to give up time to attend the workshops and assist in the workshop process.

The workshop covered three pieces of music from scratch, without recourse to notated music. We had prepared about ten pieces to choose from but simple basic material gave us chance to have workshop participants create material towards the latter half of the project. The chosen pieces were:
Remember When (Craig Harris)
Haitian Fight Song (Charles Mingus)
Jumping at the Woodside (Count Basie)

With this material we were able to look at the issues of:

  • Improvisation
  • Swing
  • Simple arranging
  • Devising backing lines
  • Stylistic playing and awareness:
modern jazz, contemporary New Orleans brass band styles, swing

Tutor Feedback:
Rob: I was personally very pleased with the way the weekend went and feel that the participants travelled a long way in their understanding of the music in the two days of the workshop and that participants enjoyed and got a lot out of the final sharing or playing together between the two short Wonderbrass sets.

Mark O'Connor: "What a brilliant weekend! ... It was a fab experience ... We got everybody into the right place straight from the top & the tune choices couldn't have been better! "
